A conveyor idler(roller)is a core component that supports the conveyor belt and conveyed materials,consisting of rotating roller assembly and mounting frame.Below is its detailed structure:
1.Roller Assembly(The Core Rotating Part)
(1)Roller Shell(Tube)
Function:The outer cylindrical surface that directly contacts and supports the conveyor belt.
Materials:Steel(most common,cold-rolled steel pipe),HDPE plastic,or rubber-coated for impact resistance.
Specifications:Common diameters:89mm,108mm,133mm;length varies by conveyor width.
(2)Shaft(Spindle)
Function:A fixed central axis;the roller shell rotates around it.It is mounted to the idler frame.
Structure:Solid steel bar;both ends are usually flattened for anti-rotation and easy installation.
(3)Bearings
Function:Reduce friction between the shaft and rotating shell,enabling smooth rotation.
Type:Deep groove ball bearings(e.g.,6204,6205,6310)with large internal clearance for thermal expansion compensation.
Installation:One bearing at each end,fitted inside the bearing housing.
(4)Bearing Housing(End Cap/End Disc)
Function:Holds and positions the bearing;connects the bearing to the roller shell.
Materials:Steel(stamped or cast),cast iron,or plastic.
Connection:Welded or press-fitted to both ends of the roller shell.
(5)Sealing System
Function:Prevent dust,water,and debris from entering the bearing cavity;retain lubrication grease.
Common Type:Labyrinth seal(double or triple labyrinth)–non-contact,high dust/water resistance.
Structure:A combination of rotating and stationary seal rings,filled with lithium-based grease.
(6)Retaining Ring(Circlip)
Function:Axially locks the bearing and seal assembly on the shaft to prevent displacement.
(7)Lubrication
Pre-filled grease(usually lithium-based)inside the bearing and seal cavity for long-term lubrication(sealed-for-life design).
2.Idler Frame(Mounting Bracket)
Function:Supports the roller assembly and fixes it to the conveyor main frame;maintains alignment.
Structure:Made of welded steel profiles.
Common Configurations:
Troughing idler frame:Holds 3 rollers(1 center+2 side wings)at 20°–45°to form a trough for bulk materials.
Flat idler frame:Holds 1 roller for return belt or flat conveying.
Impact idler frame:Equipped with rubber rings to absorb material impact at loading points.
