Comb idlers(also called comb‑shaped idlers, rubber disc cleaning idlers,or comb return idlers)are specialized belt conveyor components designed for self‑cleaning, anti‑deviation, and sticky material handling. They replace standard smooth rollers with a comb‑like array of rigid discs or rings, making them ideal for return belts and sticky bulk material applications.
Structure
A comb idler consists of a central steel shaft fitted with multiple evenly spaced discs/rings(rubber,polyurethane,or steel)that form a comb profile. The gaps between discs allow material to fall through instead of adhering, while the rigid structure maintains belt support.Frames match standard conveyor dimensions for easy replacement.
Core Functions
Belt Cleaning:The comb structure scrapes and dislodges sticky materials(coal slime, ore fines, cement, grain dust)from the belt surface, preventing buildup and carryback.
Anti‑Deviation:The multi‑point contact and comb profile stabilize the belt, reducing wandering and misalignment.
Load Support:Distributes belt weight evenly across the disc array, maintaining proper belt tension and shape.
Wear Reduction:Minimizes abrasive wear on the belt and idler by preventing material entrapment.
Key Advantages
Superior Cleaning Performance:Eliminates material buildup on return belts, reducing cleanup and maintenance.
Belt Protection:Prevents material from grinding between the belt and idler, extending belt life.
Anti‑Deviation Stability:Improves belt tracking,reducing spillage and downtime.
Durability:Resistant to abrasion, corrosion, and impact;rubber/polyurethane discs offer noise reduction.
Easy Maintenance:Standardized design with replaceable discs;minimal lubrication required.
Applications
Comb idlers are widely used in mining, coal handling, cement plants, power stations, ports, and grain processing—anywhere sticky or fine materials cause belt fouling. They are primarily installed as return idlers but can also be used in carrying sections for highly adhesive materials.
