Conveyor idlers mostly fail for predictable, repeatable reasons—especially in harsh industries like mining, cement, steel, and ports. Here are the main causes in clear, practical terms:
1.Dust&Water Ingress(Most Common)
Fine dust, slurry,or moisture gets into the bearing cavity through poor seals. This grinds the bearings, causes noise, and locks the idler quickly.
2.Bearing Damage
Low-quality bearings, overloading, high temperature,or impact can cause fatigue, cracking,or seizure.Bearings are the weakest part of most idlers.
3.Sealing Failure
Simple,single-stage seals wear out fast.Once seals deform or crack, dust and water enter immediately, destroying the internal structure.
4.Abrasion&Wear
In mines, steel plants, and cement facilities, the idler shell wears thin from materials or belt friction.Eventually,it cracks or breaks.
5.High Temperature
In steel plants or near hot materials, heat softens grease, damages seals, and burns out bearings.
6.Corrosion
In ports, coastal areas,or chemical plants, salt spray and chemicals rust the shell and bearings, leading to early failure.
7.Strong Impact&Overload
At feeding or transfer points, heavy material impact bends the shaft, deforms the shell,or breaks the bearing housing.
8.Misalignment&Belt Tracking Issues
Belt deviation causes uneven force on idlers. One side wears rapidly, and the idler becomes noisy or stuck.
9.Poor Installation&Maintenance
Loose brackets, improper alignment,or lack of lubrication shortens life significantly.
10.Low-Quality Manufacturing
Thin tubing, weak shafts, cheap bearings, and bad assembly lead to short service life and frequent breakdowns.
