How to Select Idler Rollers Based on Conveyor Belt Width?
Selecting idlers based on conveyor belt width is crucial for ensuring stable conveyor operation and extending belt life. This mainly involves matching the idler rollers to three aspects: length, diameter, and structural type.
The idler roller length should be greater than the conveyor belt width, with a certain allowance on each side to prevent the belt from scraping the frame when it runs off-center. The industry standard is: 400mm belt width with 490mm rollers; 500mm belt width with 590mm rollers; 650mm belt width with 740mm rollers; 800mm belt width with 890mm rollers; 1000mm belt width with 1090mm rollers; 1200mm belt width with 1290mm rollers; and 1400mm belt width with 1490mm rollers. The lengths of trough idlers, parallel idlers, buffer idlers, and self-aligning idlers are all selected according to this standard.
The idler roller diameter must be compatible with the belt width, conveying capacity, and belt speed. Small-width conveyors typically use small-diameter idlers, while large-width, high-capacity conveyors use larger-diameter idlers to improve load-bearing capacity and operational stability. Generally, φ89mm idlers are commonly used for widths of 650mm and below, φ108mm idlers for 800-1000mm, and φ133mm or φ159mm idlers for 1200-1400mm.
The type of idler should also be selected based on the operating conditions: buffer idlers are used for conveying large materials, self-aligning idlers are added for scenarios prone to deviation, trough idlers are used for general conveying, and parallel idlers are used for return conveyors. Appropriate selection can reduce resistance, minimize deviation and wear, and improve the overall efficiency and service life of the conveyor.
