How Many Idlers Are Needed for a Conveyor?

The number of idlers for a conveyor depends on conveyor length,idler spacing,load,belt type,and working conditions.There is no fixed number,but you can calculate it with a clear formula.

First,determine the idler spacing.For standard belt conveyors:

Carrying idlers(upper side):Usually spaced 1–1.5 meters apart.

Return idlers(lower side):Spaced 2.5–3.5 meters apart.

Heavy loads,impact zones,or high-speed conveyors use smaller spacing(0.8–1 m),while light-duty conveyors can use larger spacing.

Next,use the basic formula:

Number of idlers=Conveyor length÷Spacing+1

The extra 1 accounts for the idler at the end point.

For example,a 100-meter conveyor with 1.25 m carrying spacing and 3 m return spacing:

Carrying idlers:100÷1.25+1=81 sets

Return idlers:100÷3+1≈34 sets

You also need to add special idlers for specific positions:

Impact idlers at the feeding point(2–5 sets)

Transition idlers at head/tail(1–3 sets each)

Self-aligning idlers every 10–20 sets to prevent belt deviation

Total idlers=carrying idlers+return idlers+special idlers.

In practice,suppliers and engineers will calculate the exact quantity based on your layout,load,speed,and belt width.Accurate idler quantity ensures stable operation,reduces belt wear,and lowers energy consumption.
