How Do Self-Aligning Idlers Work in Belt Conveyors?
Self-aligning idlers are designed to automatically correct belt misalignment and prevent the conveyor belt from running off-center.
They work on a simple mechanical principle:
When the belt drifts to one side, it creates uneven pressure on the idler rolls. The side of the idler frame under higher pressure rotates slightly around the central vertical pivot. This slight turning angle steers the belt back toward the center line of the conveyor.
Key functions:
They continuously sense the belt’s position while running.
The pivoting frame automatically adjusts the angle of the idler set.
By realigning the carrying or return idlers, they guide the belt back to center.
They reduce belt wear, edge damage, material spillage, and downtime.
Self-aligning idlers are widely used in long-distance, high-load, and uneven installations where belt wandering is common.
